A. You drill the hole in the mortise first then fit it on the ground square it up and drill the tenon. The 1" peg will hold it together when you reassemble it on site.

What's your favorite handplane for timber framing ?
A. I like a handplane that I ground the blade and opened the throat to make it a super scrub plane.

Q. Where do you use the dovetail joint in the timber frame?
A. We use the sliding dovetail with a 1" house for our drop in floor joists.
